So Proud to be Shameful

A nation in denial would call this "an integrated resort."

“Now more than a year old, the two integrated resorts in Singapore have exceeded all expectations and turned the nation into Asia’s second global gaming superpower.”

– Frank Fahrenkopf, President of the American Gaming Association, quoted saying in Macau on June 7.

Singaporeans are you proud of that?

When I read that,  I almost browned my boxers!

Scary news!

What shameless people we are!

No wonder my buddy Mauro calls this place “Sin City” – a term I detest.

Come on Singaporeans, call a casino a casino!

Who came up with that bullshit expression “integrated resorts”?

Who’s integrated?

Where are the resorts?

Marina Bay Sands certainly is no resort!

And you don’t put a cranked-up ferris wheel next to a gambling den on an island and call all that a resort!

Trust me; anything is possible in this country. I can’t say with certitude, but I bet soon we’ll have our very own Weiner tweeting a pic of his teeny weiner.

And we’ll be proud of that!

MPs and members of the cabinet whose religious beliefs should make them oppose gambling, are you proud now?

Religous leaders, are you proud now?

Have we counted the social costs?

Misplaced pride will take us straight to hell.

How many Singaporeans gamble at our casinos?

Singaporeans pay a levy of a 100 bucks each time they visit.

Between April and November last year, more than S$130 million in levies were collected.

Do your math – how many Singaporeans do you think visit the casinos to gamble?

Each Singaporean visitor to the casinos is one Singaporean too many!

Remember the words of  Martin Niemöller:

When the Nazis came for the communists,

I remained silent;

I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,

I remained silent;

I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,

I did not speak out;

I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,

I remained silent;

I wasn’t a Jew.

When they came for me,

there was no one left to speak out.

Singaporeans, they’re coming to get you!

Good luck, Singapore!

As for me, all my bags are packed I’m ready to go.

“He is no fool to lose what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

Skedaddle, skedaddle.

That’s me.

Is this why Lim Boon Heng cried?

Don’t cry for me Argentina, er, I mean, Singabloodypore.

Cos I for sure won’t cry for you.

From afar I just hope I won’t brown my boxers as I see you self-destruct.
