Roi nuoc or water puppetry is said to have originated in the Red River Delta.
Hiding behind the stage, puppeteers stand waist deep in water and maneuver their wooden charges to the music of traditional orchestra.
Special effects, including fire-breathing dragons, smoke and fireworks add excitement to the show.
The themes of roi nuoc are usually traditional and pertain to rural life. Mythical creatures such as dragons and unicorns also feature prominently.
If you visit Vietnam do try to check out the water puppet show.
It may be a huge tourist trap but it’s worth it.
Yuyin and I were enthralled by a performance at the Thang Long theater in Hanoi when we were there last month.
