Meet one of the most reliable supply chains in the world, the dabbawalas!
In Mumbai, dabbawalas collect freshly cooked food in lunch boxes from the residences of the office workers and deliver them to their respective workplaces and then return back the empty boxes later in the day.
In 2002, Forbes found its reliability to be that of a six sigma standard – or a 99.999999 percentage of correctness.
More than 175,000 or 200,00 lunch boxes get moved every day by an estimated 4,500 to 5,000 dabbawalas, all for an extremely small nominal fee and with utmost punctuality. According to a recent survey, they make less than one mistake in every 6 million deliveries.
Though illiterate, the dabbawalas have their own web site, give talks to business schools and are ISO-certified.
They sure put some gigantic global technology companies – with all their complex processes and procedures – to shame!
