Macao’s gambling tycoon Stanley Ho paid US$330,000/- for two huge pieces of truffles late last month and I have paid thousands before for a truffle meal, but the invitation Mauro Cattana extended to me recently was simply priceless.
His lovely 70-year-old mum hand-carried a piece of the rare tuber the size of a baseball from Italy when she flew in late last month and I was invited to his home for some simple but hearty home cooked truffle dishes.
It was a delightful evening complete with champagne, single malts, and ending with Mauro and yours truly filling our pipes with Samuel Gawith’s Balkan Flake and enjoying our fellowship.
What decadence!
