Making Snuff at Samuel Gawith

Samuel Gawith’s “pedigree” is that of a snuff manufacturer.

Today the company continues to make this historical tobacco product – which is basically tobacco ground to a very fine powder and “appreciated” using one’s nose.

The company has five base snuff products but over 70 different flavors – including (believe it or not?) Gin and Tonic, chocolate, menthol, etc.

Here are some shots I took at the Samuel Gawith factory pertaining to snuff manufacturing. The machines are centuries old, and were originally used to make gun powder. Samuel Gawith holds the distinction of employing the oldest piece of industrial equipment still in production use in the world, a device manufactured in the 1750s.
