I placed an order online for a US$14.95 walking stick from and received this email from them:

Thank you for placing your order with the Walking Equipment Company. Please read below and respond to this email. Your order is on hold until we receive a response.

Due to high amounts of international fraud we are required to verify the card holder is the actual person using the credit card for this order. In order to verify this we have placed two charges on your credit card between $0.01- $1.00 USD.

Please give the exact amounts of each of these two charges.

Call your credit card bank to verify this information. The customer service number for your credit card can be found on the back of you card. When we receive the correct information we will send out your order. If the amounts of these charges are in your currency amount please go to to convert the amount into US Dollars.

We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused but please understand that this is the only way that we can help protect ourselves and credit card holders like yourself from International Fraud.

This is a one time procedure, all future orders will not require you to do this again. If you have already done this in the past please respond to this email and let us know so that we can look up the previous information.
